Hidden in the breathtaking Tenorio Volcano National Park, Rio Celeste is a gem of Costa Rica that boasts a stunning turquoise river, lush forests, and rich biodiversity. The experiences you'll have in this magical corner of Costa Rica will leave you with memories that last a lifetime. So, pack your bags and get ready for an adventure full of vibrant colors and breathtaking landscapes!

Tenorio Volcano National Park offers a popular 7km (4.3 mile) hike to view the stunning Rio Celeste (Light Blue River) and its attractions, including the waterfall, lagoon, and Teñidero (where the river's blue color begins). The hike is considered moderately challenging and can take 4-6 hours, depending on how much time is spent at each location.

You can witness incredible wildlife, explore various ecosystems, and immerse your self in a once in a lifetime natural phenomenon along the way.

Spend a whole day wandering through this remarkable park, and let the beauty of Central America leave you in awe. From hiking to the waterfall to witnessing a unique phenomenom called "El Teñidero", here are 5 unforgettable natural wonders you can expect to see when exploring Rio Celeste.

  1. Immerse your self in Rio Celeste Waterfall (Catarata Río Celeste)

One of the highlights of Rio Celeste is the beautiful waterfall that plunges into the crystal-clear turquoise waters below. The hike to the waterfall is about 3.5 kilometers and offers a mix of lush vegetation and opportunities for wildlife spotting. You'll traverse through scenic trails, so be sure to bring your camera to capture the enchanting views. The roaring sound of the waterfall and the vibrant colors of the surroundings make this an unforgettable experience. Remember to wear sturdy shoes, as the trails can be slippery!

  2. See all of Tenorio Volcano from the viewpoint (El Mirador)

The viewpoint (el mirador) is located about 500 meters after the Río Celeste Waterfall, following a climb of 250 steps from the base. It is accessible via a well-marked side path along the main trail.

From the Mirador (viewpoint), you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the primary rainforest, the Tenorio volcanic massif, and—on a clear day—you can also spot adjacent cones such as Tenorio Dos and Cerro Montezuma.

  3. Take in the magic of the blue river pools (La Laguna Azul)

Beyond the waterfall, the river is dotted with enchanting blue pools that are perfect for relaxing. The captivating crystalline waters invite you to take a break and enjoy the natural beauty around you.

Spend time sightseeing by the blue river pools while taking in the unique flora and fauna that flourish in this vibrant ecosystem.

  4. View volcanic hot springs (Los Borbollones)

See hot volcanic gases bubbling through the river. Hot springs appear along the riverbed within the lower section of the park. Temperatures vary, with some bubbling mud pots reaching between ~31 °C and 94 °C (depending on specific spots like “Los Hervideros”).

Note: Swimming is no longer allowed in these thermal pools, but can still be enjoyed from the trails for their beauty. Always follow SINAC rules and posted signs.

  5. Witness the dye point of the waters (El Teñidero)

"El Teñidero" translates to "the dye point" or "the dyer" in English, and it refers to the specific location within Tenorio Volcano National Park where two rivers converge, resulting in the distinctive blue coloration of Rio Celeste. This unique phenomenon occurs due to a chemical reaction between the minerals from the two rivers, Quebrada Agria and Rio Buena Vista

The "El Teñidero" is located after passing the waterfall and mirador sections, about 2,500 meters from the start of the hiking trail.

Local Favorite: Swim in the Turquoise Waters

After hiking to the waterfall, take the opportunity to dip your toes—or take a full plunge—into the refreshing waters of the Rio Celeste. The unique turquoise color is due to the chemical reactions between volcanic minerals, making it a truly one-of-a-kind swimming experience.

Relax and enjoy the tranquility of nature surrounding you while savoring the fresh air.
